We live in a world saturated with advertising. When we open Instagram in the morning to check for updates, our eyes catch dozens of different book releases flipping through the feed. But digital screens are not the only place where literature is promoted. As we head to school, college, university, or work, we notice outdoor posters announcing upcoming events and new books.
So, what kind of instrumentals do publishing houses actually use in their commercials?
Of course, every major publisher today maintains active social media accounts on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. This is the most accessible channel because it is relatively cheap and easy to manage; you do not have to spend massive budgets if you can post directly to your profile. Yet, posts from official publishing houses’ pages are rarely the most effective way to promote books, as very few readers follow publishers' corporate accounts specifically.
The most popular and valid version of book advertising is a content created by bookbloggers. We all likely have favorite creators whose recommendations we trust. In popular "Book haul" videos — which I personally enjoy watching — bloggers unbox packages sent by publishing houses. Another highly effective format is the "Read with me". During these videos, we can see a book and emotions that were caused by this book. It is an excellent form of advertisement because it feels personal. When we don’t know what to read we probably go to TikTok to watch “book recommendations”. Some bloggers recommend a book that has been paid for.
Bookstores, libraries, and platforms where you can buy books. Usually, they have ads. For example, publishing houses arrange a meeting in bookstores and libraries. In stores, there are lots of tables with books on them and “the choice of readers’”, etc. slogans. Big posters with releases and bestsellers. All of this is a commercial which keeps customers hooked.
Authors themselves act as independent marketing channels. Almost every writer promotes their work using personal social media accounts. If you follow an author, you are the first to know about their upcoming projects. Furthermore, authors can also advertise not only their own books, but also the books of others. For example, books by authors who are in the same publishing house with them.
We go to publishing websites where, in my opinion, they post the most information. Most often at the very beginning of the website they have billboards that inform buyers about news and promotions. Below we can see releases, bestsellers and upcoming events. Then we see a book collection and if the publishing house has a blog, it appears. The entire blog on the publishing company’s website is used to advertise books. If you subscribe to a newsletter from publisher houses, then you know they love sending emails with news. Which is also advertising.
In conclusion, I want to say that publishing houses use a lot of advertising but it doesn’t mean anything bad. By dint of a promotion, you probably found a book which you liked. Advertising helps unpopular authors with book sales.
